Chemotherapy: intralesional

Clapis

Introduction

  • Intralesional chemotherapy involves injecting antineoplastic drugs into and around a tumor.
  • It is a simple and direct approach to treat solid tumors.
  • Currently the drug of choice is cisplatin suspended in a water/sesame oil emulsion or a collagen matrix to allow slow release of the drug locally.

Uses

Advantages

  • Allows a higher therapeutic index.
  • Reduces the likelihood of side effects.

Disadvantages

  • Aqueous drugs used may be rapidly cleared from the tumor site so that the length of time the tissue is exposed to the drug is short and there is systemic exposure that may result in toxicity.
  • Nephrotoxicity is the most common side effect of using cisplatin.
