Clapis

Synonym(s): Rain rot, rain scald

Introduction

  • Only been described experimentally in rabbits.
  • Cause: the bacterial Dermatophilus congolensis  Dermatophilus congolensis  .
  • Signs: soft tissue lesions in rabbits from deep injection of D. congolensis. In other species signs include skin lesions, subcutaneous firmness and/or masses.
  • Diagnosis: cultures, histology and PCR.
  • Treatment: treat underlying and environmental conditions. Antibiotic therapy may involve multiple drugs given over a long duration in other species dependent on sensitivities.
  • Prognosis: not been recorded in rabbits. In other species, the prognosis varies depending on affected tissues. Poorer prognosis if affecting deeper tissues.

Presenting signs

  • Dermatophilosis has not been reported in the literature as a specific condition in rabbits apart from induced experimental papers:
    • In one study, a deep injection of D. congolensisinto the foot pad of rabbits produced soft tissue lesions, but did not infect the bones.
  •  D. congolensisis likely to act synergistically with other bacteria to produce generalized lesions.
