Trachea: rupture - repair

Introduction

  • Tracheal rupture is an infrequent complication of traumatic or iatrogenic injury in the cat.
  • Cervical bite wounds are one of the most common causes of tracheal laceration or rupture . 17% of animals with a cervical bite wound had airway injury in one study.
  • Endotracheal intubation Endotracheal intubation may cause tracheal rupture in the cervical trachea or at the thoracic inlet.

Uses

  • Repair of traumatic or iatrogenic tracheal injuries.

Techniques

  • Surgical repair by resection and direct anastomosis of the damaged trachea.
  • Direct closure of some defects may be possible.
  • Permanent tracheostomy: rarely used in cats .
