Seldinger (over the wire) technique

Introduction

  • To introduce a flexible silicon catheter into a large vein such as the jugular vein. These are often called long stay catheters. They are usually softer and cause less damage to the vessel wall and can be used for sampling (eg useful for diabetic patients).

Uses

Advantages

  • Simple procedure.
  • Can be performed without anesthesia.
