Schirmer tear test

ffelis

Synonym(s): STT

Introduction

  • Method of measuring the amount of tears produced per unit time.
  • Tears produced cause wetting of standard test strips due to basal and reflex tearing (when performing traditional STT, or STT I).

Uses

  • Method of diagnosis of hyposecretion by the lacrimal and nictitans glands.
  • Detection of keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) Eye: keratoconjunctivitis sicca.
  • Evaluation of response of KCS to lacrimogenic or parasympathomimetic agents.

Disadvantages

  • Some normal animals may have a low STT. Need to correlate results with clinical signs and test suspicious animals frequently to monitor for trends.
  • Does not detect qualitative tear film deficiency, which is deficiency in lipid or mucin components of tear film. Animals with qualitative deficiency may have signs attributable to an unhealthy tear film, but may still have normal STT.
