  • Fusidic acid.

Class of drug

  • Narrow spectrum fusidane antibiotic.

Description

Chemical name

  • (17Z)-16beta-acetoxy-3alpha, 11alpha-dihydroxyfusida-17(20), 24-dien-21-oic acid.

Molecular weight

  • 517 in the anhydrous form.

Physical properties

  • Poorly soluble in water, therefore prepared as the diethanolamine or sodium salts in some preparations.

Indications

  • For treatment of fusidic acid sensitive bacterial infections.
  • Predominantly effective against gram positive bacteria.
  • Has very good activity against staphylococci, includingStaphylococcus intermedius  Staphylococcus intermedius  and most strains ofStaphylococcus aureus  Staphylococcus aureus  , including beta-lactamase-producing and methicillin-resistant strains, corynebacteriae , clostridae   Clostridia spp  , and Actinomyces sp   Actinomyces pyogenes  .
  • The genera Streptococcus,Neisseria (Branhamella),Bacillus,Bordetella  Bordetella bronchiseptica  andMycobacteriaare moderately sensitive.
  • Most coliform bacteria and fungi are resistant.
  • Used in treatment of bacterial blepharitis and conjunctivitis associated with Staphylococcus aureus   Staphylococcus aureus  and S. intermedius   Staphylococcus intermedius  .
  • Skin infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria particularly surface pyodermas .
  • Treatment of otitis externa   Otitis externa  .
