Introduction

  • Rigid endoscopes used for avian and small mammal work are frequently used for diagnostic endoscopy and endoscopic assisted surgery in reptiles.
  • Endoscopy provides a minimally invasive way to evaluate the oral cavity, lungs, stomach, cloaca, urinary bladder and coelomic organs.
  • Endoscopic biopsies are faster and less invasive than surgical celiotomy. Wounds are smaller and there is less pain associated with celiotomy.
  • Equipment is much more readily available and can often be used in other species.
  • The most common procedures performed are celioscopy Celioscopy, tracheoscopy, cystoscopy.
  • Endoscopy is particularly useful for liver biopsy in lizards and chelonia Biopsy overview.
