Indications

  • Multiple deficiencies of B vitamins may occur in patients with renal or hepatic disease.
  • Multiple deficiencies of B vitamins may occur in guinea pigs not performing cecotrophy.
  • Injections of vitamin B complex (IM or SC) are commonly performed in guinea pigs that are convalescent, weak or inappetant, such as in cases of pregnancy toxemia or when they are not eating cecotrophs. The injection can be repeated weekly.
  • Specific vitamin B deficienies have been reported in guinea pigs, although they are not particularly common:
    • Vit B1 deficiency: CNS symptoms (tremors, ataxia).
    • Vit B2 deficiency: corneal vascularization.
    • Niacin (nicotinic acid) deficiency: anemia and diarrhea in young animals.
    • Pantothenic acid deficiency: anorexia, weight loss and intestinal hemorrhage.
    • Vit B6 deficiency: folic acid deficiency and convulsions.
    • In addition, abortion can be seen in pregnant sow with vitamin B deficiency.
