Introduction

General information

  • Named after the Dalmation breed of dog due to their spots!
  • A rare breed due to the the gene mutations when bred together.
  • Dalmations (and Roans Roan) get their coloring from a gene called the 'RnRn' gene or 'lethal' gene; if two Dalmations are bred together these genes cause deformities in the pups, eg deafness, blindness (missing eyes), loss of smell, missing teeth, deformities, etc. Pups are also born completely white with red eyes and often die soon after birth if not euthanized.
  • Genetic mutations also occur if Dalmations and Roans are bred together.
  • Most Dalmation breeders breed a Dalmation solely to non-carriers of the 'lethal' gene to avoid the risk.
