Introduction

  • Collection of respiratory secretions from the trachea via an endoscope as an adjunct in the diagnosis of respiratory disease.

Uses

Advantages

  • Straightforward and rapid technique.
  • Relatively non-invasive.
  • Often requires no sedation or other drug use (NB: racing/competing).
  • Tracheal samples good reflection of generalized pulmonary disease.
  • Visual inspection of trachea and upper airways possible concomitantly.
