  • Aspiration of bone marrow for cytological examination to characterize response in various disease entities.
  • Primary indications are anemia , persistent leukopenia , persistent thrombocytopenia   Thrombocytopenia: overview  and hemopoietic neoplasia .

Uses

  • Regenerative/non-regenerative anemia .
  • Myeloid neoplasia .
  • Lymphoid neoplasia .
  • Plasma cell myeloma .

Advantages

  • Simple and easy technique.
  • Allows definitive diagnosis of certain hemolymphatic system diseases.

Disadvantages

  • Some risk of complications if technique incorrectly applied.
