  • Principal breeding areas in the UK are:
    • Newmarket (Suffolk).
    • Lambourn (Berkshire).
    • Malton (Yorkshire).
  • Three famous foundation sires:
    • Darley Arabian.
    • Byerley Turk.
    • Godolfin Barb.
  • However, other stallions have a large influence on the breed, eg:
    • The Unknown Arabian.
    • Darcy's Chestnut Arabian.
    • The Lister Turk.
  • Cannot be matched in both speed and distance.
  • Three basic types:
    • Sprinter (tall, long and very fast).
    • Stayer (smaller and shorter with good stamina).
    • Middle-distance (well-suited for cross-country).
  • Great endurance and agility.
  • Used to improve other breeds.
