Introduction

  • The need to feed an orphan foal prolonged bottle feeding may result in a foal/young horse with aberrant behavior.

Presentation

  • Orphan foal.
  • Non-parturient mare which has not foaled for at least one year; must have foaled at least once before.
  • Mare must have a history of being a good mother.

Cost considerations

  • Purchase/loan and keep of foster mare.
  • Cost of staff for initial supervision of mare and foal.
  • Cost of drugs.

Special risks

  • Mare rejects the foals and is aggressive to the foal and/or people trying to supervise the adoption.
