Introduction

  • Pseudopregnancy occurs when a mare has conceived and the embryo/fetus subsequently dies.
  • If the embryo dies before day 12 of pregnancy, the reproductive cycle is unlikely to be affected   Female: reproductive cycle - normal  the primary corpus luteum regresses at the normal time or prematurely, and the mare returns to estrus when she is expected to/earlier than expected.
  • If the embryo dies after maternal recognition occurs (day 15) the reproductive cycle will be interrupted and the mare will not return to estrus when she is expected to.
  • If the embryo dies between day 15 and c36 a Type I pseudopregnancy ensues.
  • If the embryo/fetus dies between day c37 and c150 a Type II pseudopregnancy occurs.
