Clinical Effects

Epidemiology

Habitat

  • Equine respiratory tract.

Pathological effects

  • Immunocompetent foals show subclinical or mild infections.
  • Fatal pneumonia may occur in immunocompromised foals   Equine adenovirus infection (EAI)  .
  • Clinical signs: coughing, dyspnea, conjunctivitis   Conjunctivitis: overview   and pyrexia.
  • Causes persistent neutropenia and lymphopenia.
  • Intranuclear inclusion bodies may be found in respiratory and salivary gland epithelium.
  • Case fatality may approach 100%.

Other Host Effects

  • Prevalence of infection high in many equine populations; usually subclinical.
  • Prevalence 60-75%; up to 90% in Arabian horses   Arab  .

Control

Control via animal

  • Supportive therapy if required.

Control via chemotherapies

  • Antibiotic cover for foals with pneumonia.

Vaccination

  • None available for horses.
