Introduction

  • Placing a stomach tube allows:
    • Removal of gastric contents Gastric lavage.
    • Administration of substances.
    • Decompression.

Uses

Advantages

  • Relatively safe if carried out correctly.
  • Simple and requires only equipment usually found in veterinary practice.
  • Effective.
  • Cheap.

Disadvantages

  • Risk of misplacement into trachea.
  • In gastric dilation/torsion may not get tube into stomach.
  • May require mild sedation in most dogs that resist passage of tube - can be high stress to patient and can result in dog bites from aggressive dogs.
