Local anesthesia: intradermal

Introduction

  • Injection of a bleb of local anesthetic into a small, localized area of skin to be desensitized.

Uses

  • Inserting large cannulae.
  • Epidural injections.
  • Placing chest drains in conscious animals.
  • Removing small cutaneous masses.
  • Skin biopsy.

Advantages

  • Rapid and simple to do.

Disadvantages

  • Distorts skin with bleb can interfere with suturing.
