Introduction

  • Intra-articular anesthesia is frequently used for peri-operative analgesia in dogs and cats undergoing arthroscopy or arthrotomy.
  • It may also be used to facilitate lameness diagnosis in dogs.

Uses

Advantages

  • Provides localised peri-operative analgesia that can avoid the side effects associated with systemic analgesics such as opioids Analgesia: opioid.
  • Can provide long-term analgesia for conditions such as osteoarthritis.

Disadvantages

  • Requires strict aseptic technique Surgery: asepsis.
  • Requires skilled personnel.
  • Some drugs used for intra-articular analgesia are toxic for articular cartilage.
