Hip: caudolateral approach

Introduction

  • To access the hip joint.

Uses

  • Open reduction of craniodorsal luxations.
    Not commonly used for this.
  • To repair acetabular and ischial fractures.

Disadvantages

  • Risk of iatrogenic damage to sciatic nerve as it courses caudal to greater trochanter.
  • Does not give good access to the cranial aspect of the acetabulum or ilium if needed to be included in a fracture repair.
