Introduction

  • Samples of aqueous humour provide the opportunity for cytology, bacterial culture and susceptibility, protein measurement, antibody titers and PCR.  
  • Therefore analysis of aqueous may be helpful in evaluating the eye with anterior uveitis and intraocular neoplasia.
  • It is occasionally used as a means to rapidly reduce the intraocular pressure. 

Uses

  • Investigation of uveitis Uveitis when the systemic diagnostic work-up fails to obtain an etiological diagnosis. 
  • Investigation of suspected intraocular neoplasia Eye: intraocular neoplasia, in particular lymphoma.  
  • Investigation of infectious agent involved in intraocular infection, likely a result of intraocular surgery, globe perforation, or septic implantation syndrome.  
  • Protein electrophoresis.
