Cholecystotomy

Introduction

  • Surgical incision into the gallbladder.

Uses

  • Cannulation and irrigation of the cystic and bile duct to:
    • Confirm patency of these ducts
    • Attempt removal of sludge or choledocholiths (and less commonly blood clots) causing obstruction within these ducts by flushing with saline.
  • Removal of biliary sludge Biliary system: disease (cholestatic disease).
  • Biopsy of the gallbladder.
  • Removal of symptomatic choleliths from the gallbladder Gallbladder disease: overview.
  • For cholecyststomy tube placement to allow temporary biliary diversion/maintain decompression of the gallbladder.
