Overview

  • Secreted by corpus luteum, placenta and small amounts from adrenal cortex and in the male, the testes Hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis diagram - female.
  • Progesterone concentrations are very low in pro-estrus.
  • Rise to peak about 10 days after luteinizing hormone (LH) surge.
  • Then decline unless fertilization has occurred when levels remain high to full term.
