Overview

  • Phenobarbitone Phenobarbital is most effective anticonvulsant in delaying progressive intensification of seizure activity.
  • Serum concentrations are not related to oral dose and depend on:
    • Gastrointestinal absorption (slowed by presence of food, diarrhea, and malabsorptive disorders).
    • Induction of drug-metabolising hepatic enzymes.
    • Concurrent therapy.
  • Used to monitor primidone Primidone therapy as primidone converted to phenobarbitone and phenylmalonamide (PEMA) in liver.
