Methodologies

  • Aerobic, anaerobic and fungal culture and sensitivity.
  • Gram-stained smear.

Availability

  • Widely available at commercial laboratories.
  • Smears can be examined in house to give early indication of etiology of infection, ie Gram positive or negative; rods or cocci to allow empirical treatment to be started.

Technique (intrinsic) limitations

  • There may be low numbers of organisms in the CSF resulting in negative culture.
  • May require enriched culture and special techniques.

Technician (extrinsic) limitations

  • Contamination of specimen during collection, may invalidate result.
