Overview

  • C-reactive protein (CRP Acute phase proteins ) is a positive acute phase protein released as part of the acute phase response following tissue injury.
  • The acute phase response is highly non-specific but helps to limit tissue damage and promote healing following trauma, infection or inflammation.
  • The concentration of CRP increases dramatically in dogs within 4-6 hours of inflammation or tissue damage.
  • The magnitude of the increase reflects the intensity of the inflammation.
  • CRP decreases rapidly again following successful management of the underlying inflammatory process.
  • CRP is of no diagnostic use in the cat.

Tests

Methodologies

  • A number of studies have validated the use of the human assays in dogs. Canine serum CRP can be reliably measured using the commercially available turbidometric immunoassay and ELISA Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) assay designed for use in humans.
  • An ELISA is currently available that is specific for canine CRP.
  • CRP is isolated from acute-phase serum by affinity chromatography.

  • Available at many commercial laboratories, eg Garscube Diagnostics, Glasgow, UK; Axiom Veterinary Laboratories, Devon, UKwww.axiomvetlab.co.uk).
  • Patient-side ELISA is also available for use in practice.

Validity

Specificity

  • Test is poorly specific - acute phase proteins raised in any inflammatory disease and not specific for any one condition.

Technique (intrinsic) limitations

  • Usually must be interpreted in conjunction with other laboratory and clinical findings to reach a diagnosis.
