Description

Molecular formula

  • Each litre contains:
    • 6.0 g sodium chloride.
    • 0.4 g potassium chloride.
    • 0.27 g calcium chloride dehydrate.
    • 28.9 ml of molar sodium lactate.

Physical properties

  • Clear colorless solution.

Storage requirements

  • Store at 2-25°C (shelf-life 2 years).
    Discard after single dose.

Indications

  • LRS is an isotonic balanced electrolyte solution.
  • Its makeup is similar to extracellular fluid.
  • Water/electrolyte replacement.
  • LRS is a replacement solution. It is designed to be administered rapidly in large volumes. Its composition is such that it should not significantly disrupt plasma electrolyte concentrations.
  • LRS may be used as a maintenance fluid if potassium is added.
  • Metabolic acidosis.
  • Lactate is added to act as an alkalinizing agent.
