Indications

  • Ascites.
  • Pleural effusion Pleural: effusion.
  • Edema.
  • Hypertension Hypertension.
  • When using hydrochlorthiazide to treat hypertension, if potassium loss is/may be a clinical problem, it should be used in combination with a potassium sparing diuretic, eg amiloride.
  • To inhibit lactation in pseudopregnancy.

with other drugs



Corticosteroids
  • Increased possibility of hypokalemia developing.
Digoxin
  • Thiazide-induced hypokalemia may increase the risk of digoxin toxicity Digoxin. Thus, potassium therapy may be necessary during prolonged administration.
Sulfonamides
  • May potentiate thiazide activity.
Quinidine
  • Half-life may be prolonged by thiazides (alkalinizes urine) Quinidine.
Diazoxide
  • Increased chance of hyperglycemia, hyperuricemia and hypotension Diazoxide.
Vitamin D or calcium salts
