Dietary type and/or components cause gastric dilation and volvulus

  • Gastric dilation and volvulus(GDV) Stomach: gastric dilatation / volvulus (GDV) syndrome = rapid, abnormal stomach distension, often with stomach rotation, which typically occurs after eating a meal followed by a large volume of water or exercise.
  • Underlying cause not known, many postulated:
    • Genetic predisposition.
    • Dietary management practices - see below.
    • Diet type and composition.
    • Intrinsic abnormalities, eg increased serum gastrin or altered gut motilty.
  • Current theories propose a functional defect that prevents normal gastric motility and emptying.

    Dietary management practices
  • Size and number of meals increases susceptibility.
  • Most cases occur on a full stomach.
  • Feeding one large meal per day seems to lead to increased gastric distension but not to changed gastric motilty.
  • No data implicates diet composition as a cause.
  • Intragastric soaking of dry food caused no problems in studies.
