BVA/KC Chiari Malformation Syringomyelia Scheme

icanis

Introduction

  • The BVA/KC Chiari Malformation- Syringomyelia (CM/SM) Scheme is a joint scheme between the British Veterinary Association (BVA) and the Kennel Club (KC).
  • The aim of the Scheme is to reduce or eliminate the incidence of inherited CM and SM Neurology: Chiari-like malformation/syringomyelia in dogs by excluding affected dogs before breeding.
  • The Scheme requires an MRI scan of the brain and upper neck.
  • Any dog (pedigree or crossbreed) can be examined under the CM/SM Scheme.
  • The CM/SM Scheme gives a grade and issues a certificate, which can be used for selecting the right breeding dog, based on BVA/KC matching recommendations.
  • In addition, results from the scheme may be used to generate Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) Breeding: estimated breeding values for SM, which are statistical estimates of the genetic risk for a given disease in individual dogs and a measure of the likelihood of their passing it off to their offspring.
