Micropunctum

Introduction

  • Cause: variation of imperforate punctum - congenital abnormality of lacrimal system more common in the lower punctum.
  • Signs: epiphora common - may have rust-coloured staining of hair at medial canthus.
  • Diagnosis: delayed fluorescein drainage.
  • Treatment: surgery if required.
  • Prognosis: good.

Pathogenesis

Etiology

  • Congenital.

Pathophysiology

  • Congenital narrowing of lacrimal punctum → epiphora (tear overflow).

Timecourse

  • Usually not seen >8 weeks old.
