Lissencephaly

Introduction

  • Rare condition reported in a few breeds.
  • Consists of marked reduction or absence of cerebral gyri.
  • Signs: altered behavior, visual deficits, postural abnormalities and seizures.
  • Signs: signs, MRI.
  • Treatment: none possible.
  • Prognosis: poor.

Pathogenesis

Etiology

  • Intrinsic defects in migration of neurons may be caused by metabolic or degenerative alterations during pregnancy.
  • Exogenous effects on fetus during gestation.

Predisposing factors

General
  • Intra-uterine hypoxia or perfusion failure.

Pathophysiology

  • Marked reduction or absence of cerebral gyri.
  • Defect in neuronal migration → marked reduction of cerebral gyri → forebrain dysfunction.

Timecourse

  • Insidiously evolving condition with signs detected during the 1st year of life.
