Laryngeal disorders

Disorders of the bovine larynx include:

  • Necrotic laryngitis.
  • Laryngitis.
  • Foreign bodies.
  • Edema.
  • Abscessation/Chondropathy.
  • Contact ulcers.
  • Granulomas.
  • Papillomas.

  • Laryngeal disease in cattle is most commonly caused by infection with Fusobacterium necrophorum Fusobacterium necrophorum and treatment of necrobacillosis with a variety of broad-spectrum antibiotics is usually successful.
  • Laryngitis and other, much less common, causes of laryngeal disease include foreign bodies, edema, abscessation, contact ulcers, granulomas and papillomas.
  • Laryngeal chondritis, a condition characterised by chronic suppuration within the arytenoid cartilages of the larynx, resulting in swelling and occlusion of the laryngeal lumen has been described in calves and cattle and has been reported to respond well to treatment with systemic lincomycin.
    • There are no injectable Lincomycin Lincomycin products licensed in the UK for use in cattle. Treatment options are discussed below.
