Closed reduction: hip
Contributor(s): Melvyn Pond
Introduction
- To relocate luxated hip.
- Should be first method to be attempted as soon as possible following injury - best prognosis.
- Following evaluation to ensure patient is safe to be anesthetized.
Uses
Advantages
- Quick procedure requiring only short-acting anesthetic.
Disadvantages
- Maintenance of closed reduction will be difficult if there are fragments of bone in acetabulum, where acetabulum is shallow or there are any signs of hip dysplasia.
- Closed reduction will not be possible if there is soft tissue interposed between femoral head and acetabulum - further manipulation may result in reduction.
Excessive attempts at closed reduction may produce more damage to soft tissue and cartilage.
