Closed reduction: hip

Introduction

• To relocate luxated hip.
• Should be first method to be attempted as soon as possible following injury - best prognosis.
• Following evaluation to ensure patient is safe to be anesthetized.

Uses

• Hip luxation Hip: luxation.

Advantages

• Quick procedure requiring only short-acting anesthetic.

Disadvantages

• Maintenance of closed reduction will be difficult if there are fragments of bone in acetabulum, where acetabulum is shallow or there are any signs of hip dysplasia.
• Closed reduction will not be possible if there is soft tissue interposed between femoral head and acetabulum - further manipulation may result in reduction.
  Excessive attempts at closed reduction may produce more damage to soft tissue and cartilage.
