Blood types

Introduction

  • Blood groups are defined by the inherited antigens that are present on the surface of erythrocytes.
  • The most commonly used nomenclature to define canine blood group antigens is the Dog Erythrocyte Antigen (DEA) System.
  • Worldwide many canine blood types have been described, but the most commonly discussed are DEA 1.1, DEA 1.2, DEA 3, DEA 4, DEA 5, DEA 7 (Hale 1995).
  • In its simplest form a dog will be positive or negative for a blood type and this corresponds to an antigen being present or absent on an erythrocyte surface.
