Introduction

  • Cause: unwanted mating or mismating.
  • Diagnosis: ultrasound or Relaxin assay.
  • Treatment: effectiveness depends on timing of interventino, but is normally very high.
  • Prognosis: depends on treatment.

Pathogenesis

Etiology

  • Unwanted mating of estrus female.

Predisposing factors

General
  • Un-neutered estrus female allowed to roam or have contact with intact male.
  • Canines are highly fertile → chance of pregnancy = >80%.

Specific

  • Breeding is not wanted or bitch is bred by inappropriate male.

Pathophysiology

  • Normal process.

Timecourse

  • Occurs during estrus.
